Global warming and melting sea ice has made the Arctic more accessible for navigation and the gathering of natural resources. Svalbard is a good focus point for its international status, but the tensions regarding the archipelago are more complex and nuanced than popular discourse often portrays it as. In my first article for the Ulkopolitist I argue that we shouldn't lose focus on the longer term security threat of the climate crisis even in these turbulent times.
